  • Sen. Barbara Boxer presented with "Legislator of the Year" award
SIA presented Boxer with the award in a ceremony on Capitol Hill on Dec. 18. Specifically, SIA recognized Boxer as its 2013 Legislator of the Year for her efforts to enact the School Safety Enhancements Act of 2013 (S. 146), which would provide vital funding to the federal Secure Our Schools grants program administered by the U.S. Department of Justice, and provide schools with more resources to install classroom locks, lighting, fencing and reinforced doors, as well as to help them conduct security assessments and provide security training for students and staff.
  • SIA Supports Critical Infrastructure Bill
In September, SIA sent a letter to Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-PA) supporting H.R. 2952, the "Critical Infrastructure Research and Development Act of 2013" (CIRDA). This legislation calls for DHS to develop a Research and Development Strategy for critical infrastructure technologies, increased public-private partnerships and creates a clearinghouse through which the public and private sectors can access and share security technologies for use in protecting critical infrastructure. • SIA Expresses Concerns about Reverse Auctions
SIA recently sent a letter to the General Services Administration (GSA) outlining its concerns about the GSA Reverse Auction Program. This program may impede the ability of small business security dealers to participation in the program and limit the availability of high-quality security products to government end-users. Additionally this program limits competition as several manufacturers and integrators have policies that prohibit their participation in reverse auctions. This program also conflicts with the goal of ensuring that government customers issue awards based on historical best value.  Click here to read the letter.
