New Security Industry Association (SIA) member Calibre Engineering is a service-disabled veteran-owned small business that provides physical security foundational framework services. The company is headquartered in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, and with branch offices in California and North Carolina, it can serve clients in nearly all 50 states.

SIA spoke with Calibre Vice President of Culture and Communications Emily Villines and Vice President of Security Services Stephan Masson about the company, the security industry and working with SIA.

Tell us the story of your company.

Emily Villines: Calibre was founded by Greg Murphy in 2000. When he started the company, Greg had a vision. He endeavored to provide an unmet combination of technical expertise and client focus, striving to merge efficiency and innovation with service and quality. It is this vision that launched Calibre, an elite engineering firm focused on product quality and personalized service.

Since its creation, Calibre has grown to a staff of more than 40 that services private, public and federal clients across the nation, specializing in civil engineering, structural engineering, owner’s representation, planning, construction phase consultation and, most recently, physical security services.

Joining Calibre as the vice president of security services is Stephan Masson, who brings decades of combined security experience from his career in the U.S. Army and his time as a security project director in the private sector. We look forward to enhancing our engineering services with the addition of our physical security offerings.

What solutions/services does your business offer in the security industry? And what makes your offerings/company unique?

Stephan Masson: Calibre offers physical security foundational framework services such as threat vulnerability and risk assessments, high angle attack assessments, crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) assessments and site surveys, drone vulnerability and risk assessments, and security technology audits. Our assessments are supported by tailored basis of design documents and provide our clients with the required framework to create or enhance their security program. Additionally, we offer electronic security design services that support our clients as they work through the planning of new buildings or renovations with a design team.

In keeping with the original vision of the company, we decided to pair security expertise with exceptional service. The assessments we provide include the level of evaluation and recommendations found in traditional products, but they also include much more specific and tailored elements to help our clients learn more about their options and understand what is available to them in the industry. Giving our clients tools to navigate security matters is an important aspect of our partnership with them.

What is something we might not know about your company – or something new you are doing in security?

SM: As we developed our security services offerings, we sought to address a gap we identified between assessments and design or program development. Often, recommendations found in an assessment are aligned with best practices and relatively generic. Although such recommendations are useful and provide clients with several options, they can create more questions about what to implement, especially when it comes to security technology. Our goal is to provide multiple risk mitigation options that are specific enough and truly tailored to our customers’ unique needs and requirements. We accomplish this through a basis of design document that significantly facilitates subsequent design and implementation.

We are also undertaking a broad partnership initiative that provides our clients access to a network of outstanding professionals who can support services that we may not offer. A comprehensive security program involves many disciplines, and it can be a daunting challenge to find the right professionals for each one. We seek to facilitate our customers’ needs through the creation of a trusted network of professionals offering superior services.

What does SIA offer that is most important to you/your company? And what do you most hope to get out of your membership with SIA?

SM: SIA is a leading organization in the security industry, bringing together thousands of professionals who can share knowledge and enhance security best practices through their experiences and lessons learned. Our membership with SIA gives us access to this impressive network of experts and enables us to share our ideas and participate in the progress of the security industry.

As we evolve through our vision, we will attend SIA events and seek to get involved in discussions and workshops to collaborate with other members.
