Balancing Privacy with Effective Security – An Overview on Redaction

Thursday, March 24, 11:15 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. (PDT)
Venetian 304, Level 1

Innovations in video surveillance have greatly improved public and private organizations’ abilities to protect assets and individuals and create a more accurate repository of forensic information. However, doing so also places people’s personal information and privacy at risk. While this continues to be a challenge for security professionals, video redaction has proven to be a useful tactic in balancing effective security with protecting personal privacy.

This session will explore the challenges that impede the protection of public privacy and how video redaction on the server and at the edge can allow organizations to strengthen their security and safety protocols without compromising privacy.

“The California Consumer Privacy Act and the California Privacy Rights Act were the first comprehensive consumer privacy laws in the United States and are having a profound effect on how states look to address their own data privacy concerns. For this session we to spotlight the over 20 states that are considering broad data privacy measures, including large states like New York and Florida, as well as others like Massachusetts and Kentucky and what their impact could be for the industry. We will also look at any federal actions that may or may not be moving.”

Drake Jamali, manager of government relations, SIA

Attendees will hear about the current privacy legislation at the state and federal levels, as well as specific best practices for addressing those privacy challenges through redaction.

“SIA identifies data privacy as one of the top ten 2022 Security Megatrends. This session will examine how video redaction can mitigate PII risks and help security practitioners comply with privacy legislation in the United States and Europe.”

James Marcella, director of industry associations, Axis Communications

This presentation will underscore the security industry’s responsibility for policing itself to better protect personal privacy.

“Protecting people’s privacy is as important as providing for their security and safety. This is increasingly being recognized by regulators and users of video surveillance systems globally and video redaction tools help to provide security while offering the highest level of privacy protection. In this session we will cover different tools and discuss their advantages and disadvantages in practice.”
