SIA Women in Security Forum Scholarship: Sushma Nayak, Allegion

Sushma Nayak has built a career marked by continuous learning, leadership and a commitment to strengthening the security industry. Through the support of the Security Industry Association (SIA) Women in Security Forum (WISF) Scholarship, she has continued investing in professional growth while helping create opportunities for others. We spoke with Sushma about her journey, the impact of the scholarship and advice for the next generation of women in security.

Tell us about yourself and your career journey. 

Sushma Nayak: I am Sushma Nayak, an associate mechanical engineer at Allegion India with experience in electromechanical design, product optimization and innovation-driven engineering solutions for the residential lock market, focusing on performance, reliability, manufacturability and user value. I enjoy solving complex engineering challenges by combining technical knowledge with creativity and continuous learning. Beyond engineering, I am passionate about reading, volunteering, exploring art and cooking. 

How did receiving the WISF Scholarship impact your career? 

SN: Receiving the WISF Scholarship has been an incredible encouragement in my journey as a young engineer in the security industry. It has given me a stronger sense of confidence and belonging in a field where innovation, technology and problem solving come together to create real-world impact. The recognition has motivated me to continue pushing boundaries, strengthen my technical expertise and actively contribute toward developing secure and innovative solutions. It has also inspired me to support and encourage more women to explore opportunities and build their careers in this evolving industry. 

What advice would you give to women building a career in security? 

SN: Be curious, keep learning, and do not hesitate to take up challenges in areas where you may be the first or one of the few women. The security industry is evolving rapidly with technology and innovation, creating opportunities for engineers, problem-solvers and creative thinkers. Build your expertise, seek mentors and remember that your unique perspective can create meaningful imp 

How can the industry better support women? 

SN: Supporting women in security starts with creating an environment where talent, ideas and potential are recognized without bias. Organizations can encourage greater participation by providing mentorship, learning opportunities, and platforms for women to take on challenging roles and leadership positions. Individuals can contribute by fostering collaboration, sharing knowledge and actively creating opportunities to grow. A more diverse workforce brings different perspectives, stronger innovation and better solutions for a safer future.
