Opposition Letter to Massachusetts Law on Temporary Locking Devices in Classrooms

Letter of opposition to Massachusetts HB 3871

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has expressed concerns with Massachusetts HB 3871, which would amend state law to include “temporary door locking devices” for public schools to use in classrooms.

In an June 25, 2019, letter to Massachusetts Rep. Alice Hanlon, chair of the Joint Committee on Education, SIA shared concerns that the revision to the code is too broad and permits the use of devices that do not meet proper code requirements for free egress. Additionally, SIA discussed how willful misuse of the devices could prevent both escape and intervention.
