Security Industry Association Supports Legislation to Address Vehicular Terrorism

Policy Briefing: Preventing Vehicular Attacks

SIA to hold Capitol Hill policy briefing on the prevention of vehicular attacks; briefing is scheduled for May 10, 2018.

Silver Spring, Maryland (March 13, 2018) – The Security Industry Association (SIA) applauds the recent approval by the House Homeland Security Committee of H.R. 4227, the Vehicular Terrorism Prevention Act, a bipartisan bill introduced by Rep. Bob Latta, R-Ohio, and amended by Rep. Dan Donovan, R-N.Y., directing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop and implement a strategy to combat the threat of vehicular terrorism.

“Unfortunately, public areas and places where crowds gather for events have become targets for vehicular attacks around the world and recently in New York and Virginia,” said SIA CEO Don Erickson. “We support the efforts by Chairman Donovan and Congressman Latta to ensure there is an appropriate focus at DHS in addressing this evolving threat.”

Erickson added: “Many communities around the country are considering ways to bolster protections for public spaces. The strategic placement of bollards, traffic control systems and other security barriers in key locations is critical to protecting the public in these locations, and requires significant security and engineering expertise to deploy solutions affordably and effectively.”

SIA is soon hosting a free policy briefing event on Capitol Hill to assess the threat, “Securing Public Spaces Against Vehicular Attacks.” During the event on May 10, security and public safety experts will examine how communities are addressing safety and security in urban areas in a discussion for policymakers, federal agency personnel, state and local government leaders, academia, and industry stakeholders.

The Capitol Hill briefing on May 10 will begin at 9 a.m. at 902 Hart Senate Office Building (120 Constitution Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002).
