VMS With Auto Updates Move to the Front of the Line

Security Industry Association (SIA)

Security professionals are facing multiple serious challenges today that were only “what ifs” just a decade ago. Threats range from lax security procedures, internal threats, as well as unscrupulous hackers and terrorists. Ensuring the safety and security of an organization’s employees, assets and premises is a demanding and constant battle.

Fortunately, new physical and logical security solutions designed with intelligent software are helping to address many of these issues. Unfortunately, hackers and other cybercriminals are relentless in their attempts to breach networks and access sensitive data—and software vulnerabilities are a favorite target. And while software providers are well aware of this risk, they are equally relentless in their efforts to close these “open doors” with security patches delivered in regular updates.

The reality, however, is that although fixes are available, they are not being installed to a large extent. In fact, we are probably doing a much better job of keeping software up-to-date on our phones than for our critical security applications. A primary reason for this is the auto-update feature available on most smartphones and computers, which eliminates the need for human action or even awareness.

Video management systems (VMS) may offer the greatest potential to change this trend. New VMS software with auto-update capabilities, offered by some manufacturers, ensures that the most current and most secure versions are installed and that any potential vulnerabilities are closed—and all without the need for human action or intervention in the software updating process. As an added bonus, some solutions offer auto-update in conjunction with other features designed to expedite system updates, deliver more efficient recording and help protect systems from cyberattacks.

Keeping VMS software up to date is critical in security but no amount of updates can help if they are not installed. VMS with auto updates solves this problem and helps keep your system as secure as your phone.
