The State of Security Industry Standards: An Update From the Decentralized Identity Foundation

On Feb. 11, 2025, the Security Industry Association (SIA) Standards Committee hosted a webinar on the state of security industry standards. In a discussion moderated by SIA Standards Committee Chair Peter Boriskin (chief technology officer at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions, experts from SIA and fellow industry-related standards development organizations (SDOs) highlighted their most recent developments. Here, Kim Duffy, executive director of the Decentralized Identity Foundation (DIF), shares the latest updates on the organization’s standards initiatives.

The DIF leads standards and open-source development for decentralized identity ecosystems, enabling people, organizations and devices to interact based on verifiable trust.

DIF Labs bridges the gap between formal standards development and market-ready solutions through its accelerator program. Current projects focus on verifiable credentials trust and reputation networks, anonymous verification and more.

The Creator Assertions Working Group, associated with C2PA, will soon be hosted in DIF. This enables creators to verify attributes about their identities and digital content.

The Credential Schemas initiative standardizes data models for verifiable credentials like proof-of-age and KYC, ensuring regulatory compliance while protecting privacy and streamlining data exchange.

DIF matures the DID Method ecosystem through three key efforts:

  • The DID Methods Working Group advances specifications for core DID methods.
  • The DID Traits initiative provides machine-readable schemas to guide method selection.
  • The DID web method enhances DID: web with verifiable history while maintaining simplicity.

DIF hosts a number of special interest groups, focused on industry orregional identity considerations. We invite you to learn more and get involved on our website or by contacting us at membership@identity.foundation.
