Stuart Rawling

Stuart Rawling: Pelco was officially founded in 1957. In the first few years, we manufactured aircraft parts out of aluminum. We then progressed to making mounts for cameras. When we moved to Fresno sometime in the late 1970s, we transitioned to focusing on security mounts, which was a huge milestone since it led the way for our manufacture of housing, cameras, video storage and, finally, a full security solution provider our customers expect from us today.

What solutions/services does your business offer in the security industry? And what makes your offerings/company unique?

SR: Pelco offers an end-to-end surveillance solution, which includes cameras, storage, software, analytics and more. One of our biggest strengths is that we not only have the ability to provide every element of the video security system, but we also integrate other elements of physical security solutions into a single operating environment.

What’s something we might not know about your company – or What is your company’s vision, and what are your goals for the security industry?

SR: Pelco is a newly independent entity, and it is owned and operated within the United States. We also have a unique capability to customize our products to meet the unique environments of our end users. Our Special Modification Requests program offers the capability to custom-design and build hardware for specific applications such as hotel lobbies, where blending in with the surrounding aesthetics are desired. The program also allows end users to customize existing products for specific purposes, from changing a color to the length of a cable.

What does SIA offer that is most important to you/your company? And what do you most hope to get out of your membership with SIA?

SR: Connecting with SIA means connecting with the leadership of the security industry. In a changing world, collaboration is a key part of how manufacturers and security specialists can help fulfill their role of being able to provide security solutions that help make the world a safer place.

What is your company’s vision, and what are your goals for the security industry?

SR: Pelco’s vision is to make the world a safer place. We do this by providing high-quality products and innovative technology combined with the service and support that our end users expect from us.

What do you think are the biggest opportunities in the security industry right now?

SR: I believe that the biggest opportunities in this industry include the development and refinement of new technologies such as deep neural network algorithms. This will propel the industry forward in its capabilities to detect events more accurately; however, this is just a part of the story. The next evolution will be how information from hundreds of data sources, such as cameras and other security data points, are concentrated and analyzed. When hundreds of alarms can come together to analyze and predict behavior as a result, that’s when we’ll see a major shift in surveillance operations.

What are your predictions for the security industry in the short and long term?

SR: In the short term, we’re going to see a lot of new companies focusing on intelligence and facial recognition at the edge. As far as long term goes, we’ll be facing potentially more regulation and oversight of individual privacy. Coupled with ongoing cybersecurity concerns, security technology and solutions may need to conform to geopolitical regulations.

What do you enjoy most about being at your company – and in the security industry?

SR: I really enjoy working for Pelco and the security industry as a whole in a world that’s facing so many challenges. I feel that I am contributing and making a difference to the safety and security of everyone around the globe. I’m also deeply invested in serving our customers, who span a wide range of industries and seek solutions that suit their unique security needs.
