Coalition White House Letter Opposing a Blanket Moratorium on Facial Recognition

The Security Industry Association (SIA) is committed to promoting policies that support innovation in security and life safety technologies and supports U.S. leadership in key technology areas, including biometrics.

On May 26, 2021, SIA joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and a group of other associations in sending a letter to President Biden regarding the national dialogue over the appropriate use of facial recognition technology. The coalition expressed concern with blanket moratoriums on facial recognition and advocated for a combination of technological safeguards and policy measures to effectively mitigate any risks associated with the technology and ensure that it is developed and used responsibly.

The groups pledged to work with the Biden administration to promote the use of facial recognition in ways that simultaneously promote privacy, civil rights, societal equity, economic efficiency and U.S. leadership in technological innovation, security, public health and safety and made recommendations for how the U.S. can lead on responsible development and use of this technology.
