How SIA Can Work with Congress to Strengthen Public Trust on the use of Facial Recognition Technology

On Feb. 16, 2022, the Security Industry Association (SIA) sent a letter to congressional leadership recommending how SIA members can build public trust surrounding the use of facial recognition technology.

In this letter, SIA provided three recommendations:

  • Reinforce SIA’s policy principles related to transparency, use of facial recognition for clear and defined purposes and the use of highly accurate technology
  • Consider governance frameworks that address biometric data collection
  • Emphasize opt-in and opt-out for nonpublic safety applications
