Hiring Our Heroes: A Thought for Memorial Day

Security Industry Association (SIA)

As a military veteran, I take some time for myself on Memorial Day to reflect on the sacrifices made by our armed forces, particular colleagues in the Navy. And many other staffers at the Security Industry Association (SIA) likewise appropriately remember their own heroes and coworkers, thankful for the contributions they made to our freedom.

As we remember those no longer with us, let us also spare a thought for military veterans among us. In this regard, SIA is thankful for the great outreach conducted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s Hiring Our Heroes, a program that helps transitioning service members, military veterans, and military spouses find meaningful employment. They have a number of different initiatives and resources that employers and job seekers alike can use. SIA Member companies can turn to these resources to develop hiring plans.

The Employer Roadmap is a digital tool for companies of all sizes to use in order to develop their own military hiring strategies and programs. Employers who utilize this website receive a customized experience and can find resources, articles, case studies and action plans highlighting the nation’s best practices when it comes to recruiting, hiring and retaining top military veteran and spouse talent.

The Veteran Employment Transition Roadmap is a guide for veterans to utilize to become better equipped to navigate the employment landscape as they transition to the civilian workforce. This is a comprehensive, one-of-its-kind guide which captures essential steps for veterans to consider as they begin the transition planning process, and clarifies the public, private and nonprofit sector resources that are available to them as they are seeking employment.

SIA thanks the Chamber for these important resources. We hope your company will spare some time for our veterans this holiday weekend and then make use of these roadmaps to help elevate civilian employment among our military veterans.
