SIA Technology Insights Provides Exclusive Analyses of Security Solutions

Security Industry Association (SIA)

For the past few years, SIA has worked toward enhancing its standing as a “thought leader” in the security industry. The association has long been known for its effective government relations, standards and education programs, and we now want to enhance its reputation as an information resource for members, end-users and the public.

A key part of this effort began in June with the launch of SIA Technology Insights. This semi-annual publication contains exclusive, original, vendor-neutral articles about the latest security solutions written by experts from SIA member companies. The articles were written for CSOs, security directors and others who want to stay up-to-date on technological developments and trends, hopefully identifying security solutions for their enterprise.

The first edition focuses on one of the defining trends in today’s security industry: the transition to IP technology. More and more devices are networked, greatly enabling functionality for the user who grasps the potential of such systems, knows what specifications to look for, and understands the issues that must be addressed during implementation. SIA Technology Insights addresses many of these topics. The articles include:

  • “What’s New on the Video Surveillance Front” by Fredrik Nilsson of Axis Communications
  • “Seeing in the Dark: Smart IP Thermal Cameras for Outdoor Security” by John Romanowich of SightLogix
  • “Video Analytics in the Modern Security Industry” by Brian Karas of VideoIQ
  • “The Untapped Benefits of Recorded Video Surveillance” by Rafi Pilosoph of BriefCam
  • “The (Slow) Transition to IP in Fire and Life Safety Devices” by Christopher Peckham and Walter Frasch of Kratos
  • “Electronic Security Meets the Ecosystem” by Pedro Duarte of Samsung Techwin
  • “Security and Privacy in a Connected World” by Kathleen Carroll of HID Global
  • “The Technology Behind TWIC by Walter Hamilton of Identification Technology Partners
  • “A Case for a Green Security Landscape” by John Hunepohl and Aaron Smith of Assa Abloy

The articles average about 2,000 words each – long enough to provide information in sufficient depth to be usable but short enough to be easily read and digested in one sitting. And, just to reiterate, all of the articles are exclusive to this publication and are free of product pitches.

The primary contact at each SIA member company has been sent a copy, and more copies are available upon request. In addition, we’ve sent copies to our contacts at several vertical market associations. In the coming weeks, we will release a digital version that these associations can provide to their members.

We are very proud of this first edition and of the positive reviews that it has received, and we are already looking to build on this success in the second one, which will be published in time for ISC East. If you are interested in writing an article – and your organization is a member of SIA – please let us know.

Jay Hauhn of Tyco Integrated Security is the chairman of the SIA Board of Directors.
