SIA: Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Andre Datyelian: I am the marketing coordinator for Maxxess Systems. I am a graduate of the University of California, Riverside. At Maxxess my marketing duties focus on digital marketing campaigns, content creation, conducting demos/webinars, public relations, creating videos, meeting clients and more.

SIA: What first got you interested in security and safety as a career choice?

AD: What got me interested in security and safety with Maxxess Systems is the company’s dedication to finding solutions to security issues, specifically acts of violence. In college I always wanted to work in an industry and for a company that makes a difference. I feel that Maxxess does that and that the security industry allows me to be a part of something bigger.

SIA: What has your career path been?

AD: I had worked in a few industries on the marketing side prior to joining the security industry and Maxxess. I worked in the sports, media and pharmaceutical industries. All were great experiences, but I find myself being part of something where I can make a difference in the security/safety industry and with Maxxess.

SIA: Who has influenced you or mentored you – either within the security field or outside?

AD: In the security field my mentor has been Nancy Islas, president of Maxxess Systems. At Maxxess I did not have the traditional training I went through in my previous jobs. Rather, Nancy taught me by getting me involved with projects. In the beginning it was tough being new to the industry, but having the president of the company take me under her wing has helped me immensely in adapting.

SIA: What’s something most people don’t know about you?

AD: Something most people don’t know about me is that I also do improv. It’s been a few months since my last performance, but I used to consistently perform at the iO West Theater in Hollywood on weekends. It’s part of the reason I like marketing – you get to try a lot of different projects, and usually one will stick with the crowd.

SIA: What do you enjoy most about being at your company – and in the security industry?

AD: What I enjoy most about working for Maxxess Systems is the ability to be part of a solution that matters. Our new Early Action Systems, where we integrated human and technical intelligence, is working to stop acts of violence and other safety/security issues. We’re working with schools and hospitals to be prepared for anything. We’re doing all this without forcing schools and hospitals to break the bank on a new system. We are combining human and technical intelligence to provide a solution that stops problems before they become news stories.

SIA: What advice do you have for young professionals just starting out in the industry?

AD: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Obviously, we will make mistakes – we’re human – but it’s important to not be afraid to use the resources that are available to you – not  only in your workplace, but in the industry as well. Organizations like SIA can be helpful in guiding you where you want your career to go.

SIA: What do you think you need to enhance your career?

AD: I feel to enhance my career I need to continue to form relationships within the security industry. There are a lot of smart and hard-working people that can help me learn. I also need to continue to take advantage of organizations like SIA, who bring the community together, especially for us young security industry members.

SIA: What does the SIA RISE program offer that is most important to you/your company? And what do you most hope to get out of your membership?

AD: The SIA RISE program offers me the opportunity to learn more about the security industry and certain aspects of it that I don’t encounter every day but are important for me to know. RISE also provides me with the ability to develop new relationships with other security industry professionals.

SIA: How do you/your organization engage with SIA and in the RISE program? What are your plans for involvement in the next year (e.g., events, accessing member resources)?

AD: I plan to attend as many meetings as I can that are near my location. I hope I can increase my involvement to the point where I’m able to help host events in my local area and guide young security industry professionals.
