Operational Technology and Physical Security Convergence: A Primer
As physical security professionals, we might not always think about how operational technology (OT) fits into our work; however, OT is becoming increasingly important, especially as security systems and information technology (IT) continue to converge. With the rising number and sophistication of breaches occurring within facilities, the lines between physical security and OT are blurring. It’s necessary for us to understand how OT fits into the broader security landscape.
Traditionally, OT and IT systems have been managed separately, but combining them offers major benefits. The convergence of these systems allows for more unified management and improved data sharing, leading to better analysis and more informed security decisions.
Physical security is necessary in this integration for preventing breaches and maintaining safety. Cameras, video management systems, sensors and alarms help monitor activities within a facility. They alert security teams to potential problems, detect unauthorized access and identify unusual behavior.
For instance, in a manufacturing plant where machines produce products, if a malicious actor (cyber or physical) were to tamper with the system – like altering the mixing of chemicals to cause an explosion –effective security measures could serve as safeguards to prevent such incidents. According to a Fortinet report from earlier this summer, nearly one-third (31%) of OT organizations experienced more than six intrusions in the past year, up from 11% last year.
The Security Industry Association (SIA) is excited to announce the development of a groundbreaking report on OT and physical security. This project will be guided by a steering committee of interested members as subject matter experts and underwriters for the project, as well as insights from SIA’s Cybersecurity Advisory Board and Utilities Advisory Board. We invite your organization to participate as an underwriting sponsor!
OT should be recognized as a key component of physical security. Security professionals need to stay updated on new trends and challenges to keep their strategies effective in today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape. Understanding how to integrate OT with IT is crucial for maintaining strong physical security.
