Why AI Is Forcing a New Standard for Digital Evidence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the security industry in powerful ways. It is helping organizations detect threats faster, analyze larger volumes of data, recognize patterns, flag anomalies and improve response times. In many environments, AI is already making operations more efficient while reducing the burden on human operators. It is no longer a future concept—it is becoming embedded in the industry’s daily workflow.
But as security leaders embrace AI’s advantages, they must also confront its risks. The same technology that helps identify threats can also be used to manipulate the very digital evidence that security systems are meant to preserve.
AI-powered tools are making it easier than ever to alter images, video and audio with speed, precision and realism. What began as a problem on social platforms and in viral misinformation is quickly becoming more serious. A single altered frame, edited sequence or manipulated audio layer can undermine investigations, erode public confidence, create compliance risk and weaken the value of video in legal proceedings.
For decades, surveillance video carried a presumption of credibility. A recording was treated as a reliable representation of what happened unless someone could prove it had been falsified. That expectation is beginning to shift. In the age of AI, the burden of proof is moving from proving something is fake to proving it is real. Increasingly, organizations will need to show where footage came from, whether it could have been altered, and whether its chain of custody remained intact from the moment of capture. Authenticity is no longer just a technical concern—it’s becoming an evidentiary requirement.
The scale of the problem is hard to overstate. Millions of devices capture video used in investigations, insurance claims, public safety, corporate security, legal disputes and media coverage. At the same time, deepfake and AI-editing tools are becoming cheaper, more accessible and more convincing. That means more footage will face scrutiny, and fewer recordings will be trusted on appearance alone.
The industry can’t meet the weaponization of AI with yesterday’s tools. Watermarks, provenance data, encryption, hashing and post-event forensic analysis were developed in a different time. Today, AI is making falsification faster, cheaper and more convincing. The security industry needs to adopt a new standard for digital evidence, one built not just to store recordings, but to prove their authenticity with immutable chains of custody from the edge to the courtroom.
The security industry has always been in the business of establishing what happened. Now it must also help prove that the record itself is genuine. AI will continue to deliver important operational benefits, but if the industry fails to address how AI can be weaponized against digital evidence, it risks weakening the very foundation on which security footage has long depended. In the years ahead, capturing video will not be enough. The systems that matter most will be the ones that can prove the video is real.
