On March 31, 2020, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed into law legislation (SB 6280) that requires state and local agencies, including law enforcement, that use or plan to use facial recognition technologies to meet certain reporting and deployment requirements. This FAQ is intended to help both agencies and vendors in the state understand the law’s requirements, with the caveats that ambiguities remain and additional legislative and/or regulatory changes and clarifications are possible.

This letter from a coalition of leading associations, including the Security Industry Association (SIA) and partners — Aerospace Industries Association (AIA), the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, the American Automotive Policy Council (AAPC), the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA), the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA), the Semiconductor Industry Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce — was delivered to members of Congress on April 15. It requests a delay of implementation of section 889(a)(1)(B) of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 (P.L. 115–232), commonly referred to as part B, to no earlier than August 13, 2021.
