Career Architecture: Navigating the Security Value Chain

John Nemerofsky is chief operating officer at SAGE Integration and chair of the Foundation for Advancing Security Talent (FAST).

When I reflect on my early days in the security industry, I often think, “I wish FAST had been around when I was starting my career.”

The Foundation for Advancing Security Talent (FAST) has changed the game for anyone looking to build a meaningful career in security. If I’d had access to the resources and guidance FAST offers today, it would have accelerated not only my own growth, but also the development of countless colleagues and team members along our journey.

The Security Industry: More Than Meets the Eye

Many young professionals enter the workplace with a false understanding of possibilities. They look at roles like “technician” or “sales rep” and assume those are dead-end options.

The reality is far more rewarding than they can imagine. The security industry is an extremely complex ecosystem, a value chain, where every security professional plays a critical role in protecting people, property and information.

From system design and integration to project management, cybersecurity, compliance,  ongoing support and executive leadership, the opportunities are diverse and interconnected. Manufacturers, integrators, service providers, consultants and technology innovators all contribute to the dynamic that is the security industry, which is constantly evolving to meet new threats and challenges.

Mapping the Security Value Chain

In order to truly build a long-term and rewarding career, it is vital to understand the security value chain. Here’s a simplified map of the ecosystem:

  • Manufacturing and product development: Engineers and designers create the hardware and software that form the backbone of modern security systems.
  • Distribution and logistics: Specialists guarantee that products reach integrators and end-users efficiently and securely.
  • System integration: Project managers, technicians, and engineers design, install, and maintain complex security solutions tailored to client needs.
  • Sales and business development: Professionals connect clients with the right solutions, build relationships and drive industry growth.
  • Cybersecurity and IT: As physical and digital security converge, experts in network protection and data privacy are in high demand.
  • Compliance and risk management: With the help of specialists, organizations mitigate risk by navigating regulations and implementing best practices.
  • Support and service: Ongoing maintenance, monitoring and customer support keep systems running and clients protected.
  • Executive leadership: Sets the strategic direction, builds and empowers the team, allocates resources and drives a culture of accountability, making it essential to establishing and sustaining an effective security value chain.

Each of these roles requires a unique set of skills and offers its own path for advancement. The industry rewards those who are curious, adaptable, ambitious and committed to learning about everything the security industry has to offer.
